Last year, I decided to research contests and request reviews in order to get more exposure. After doing some research on self-published book contests, I came across NGIBA. I chose to enter NGIBA because they specifically have a Young Author (Written by Under Age 25) category. Because I was 13 when I started my manuscript and eventually published at age 24, it was a great fit and important to me to enter this specific category. Young authors are the future, and we have voices that are just as compelling and talented as older, more seasoned writers.
I am proud to represent Hispanics/Latinos, young authors, self-published writers, women authors, and Oklahoma. I’m so incredibly proud that my book placed in this year’s competition, considering the fact that they received a high volume of submissions. The hard work to complete my book paid off, and I am happy that the judges saw how much of my soul I poured into the pages, into every word.
I hope to inspire others to pursue writing and I encourage others—particularly young authors and minorities—to enter these contests. Our world needs more diverse voices.
Established in 2007, the Next Generation Indie Book Awards (also known as the Indie Book Awards) is the largest international awards program for indie authors and independent publishers. Entries come from small presses, larger independent publishers, university presses, e-book publishers, and self-published authors.
The judges consist of professionals in the publishing industry, including literary agents, editors, publishing executives, book reviewers, writing teachers, and authors. Cash prizes and medals are awarded, and all winners and finalists are invited to the Awards Gala. This year, it will be held in Washington, D.C. The top books in each category are reviewed by literary agents for possible representation. Currently, entries are being accepted for the 2023 awards cycle.
